Zangilan locates in the south-east of the Lesser Caucasus, on the left bank of Araz River. The area of the region is 710 km2, the population is 40500 (01.01.2011). The center is Zangilan city.

Zangilan was occupied on October 29, 1993. As a result of the occupation 191 people were killed, 110 people were disabled. The number of internally displaced persons is 38907. 2 people of the region were awarded the title of National Hero of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
 
As a result of the occupation, 1 town, 1 urban-type settlement, 81 villages, 13 historical monuments, 66 secondary schools, 4 musical schools, 3 museums, 67 libraries, 6 hospitals, 52 medical centers were destroyed, burned and looted by Armenian invaders.
