Khojaly locates in the north-eastern slope of the Karabakh ranges of the Lesser Caucasus. The area of the region is 940 km2, the population is 26500 (01.01.2011). The centre is Khojaly city.
Khojaly was occupied on February 26, 1992. As the result of the occupation 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 old men were brutally killed, 487 people, including 76 children were seriously injured, 1275 people were taken hostage and tortured, 150 people were missing. As a result of an act genocide, 8 families were completely annihilated, 25 children lost both parents, 130 children had been deprived of one of their parents. The number of internally displaced persons is 14406. 10 residents of Khojaly were awarded the title of National Hero of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
As a result of the occupation 48 settlements and villages, 12 secondary schools, 3 music schools, 29 libraries, 20 clubs, 18 health institutions, Children`s creative centre, History Museum, Weaving factory and Khojaly airport were destroyed, burned and looted by Armenian invaders.
